Interview with Joo Won

~ From the character of Han Gil Ro, we could see the natural charm of Joo Won.   What preparation did you do for playing this role?

PD told me to play the character freely and he wanted to see Joo Won’s unique portrayal of Han Gil Ro.   Therefore, I didn’t make up a particular character.  I just decided to play the Gil Ro living inside myself during filming.

~ So in this case, were there many ad-lib scenes?

I wasn’t deliberately playing ad-lib scenes, I just played naturally according to the flow of the acting.   Even it was written in the script the feelings that I had to express like “while I was angry” or “while I was laughing”, the flow of acting is not something like I feel angry and I had better laugh when I am happy, I have to observe how the flow of acting is and how I am feeling at that time, then I can express the appropriate feelings while I am acting.

~ Playing the genre of comedy would have given you some fun, but did you also feel it was difficult?

Anyway, I had so much fun while filming.   First, thanks to everyone, we laughed a lot and had so much fun.   Kang Hee noona herself is a very pleasant person.  Because everyone was so nice, it was relaxing when we were together.    For romance comedy, most of the scenes are mainly focused on male and female leads, therefore most of the time, it was only both of us filming.  Even we were physically exhausted, it was good that we could still support each other so well.  Thanks for that, we could do filming naturally and comfortably.

~ The interactions between Gil Ro and Seo Won were very funny, how did you go acting with Choi Kang Hee?

Other than the action scenes, I found my scenes with Kang Hee noona were very funny….. scenes like I had to hide myself inside her wardrobe when her parents suddenly came to visit her……. just the two of us comfortably eating ramen……  There were lollies on the table, we just ate them while we were saying our lines but it wasn’t edited out and was broadcast as it was (laugh).   It was really enjoyable acting with Kang Hee noona and I liked it.    Certainly, the setting of the drama was interesting but their interactions were also very funny.

~ You and Choi Kang Hee are really good acting partners.  Can you think of any similarities between Seo Won and Choi Kang Hee?

Actually there are differences between Kang Hee noona and Seo Won.  Seo Won’s character was very independent and so strong that she wouldn’t be losing to any men but she was hurt in her heart.  I am not saying Kang Hee noona is not strong but it doesn’t seem like she has to win everything.   So I guess these are the differences.

~ Gil Ro was fooled by Seo Won a few times. If it was you, would you still be loving her?

No way, but if I didn’t realize I was being fooled, I guess I would still be loving her.  However, it would be impossible if I had found out.  Personally, I think mutual trust between lovers is very important, if the trust is no longer there, I will find it hard to love her anymore, don’t you think so?

~ I am wondering why Gil Ro kept loving her even he was fooled by Seo Won.  What is your thoughts about Seo Won’s charm?

I think Gil Ro realized that Seo Won looked strong in appearance but she was actually having pain in her heart, that’s why he couldn’t forget her.   She was so headstrong saying “I can do everything!” but the pain was still hovering in her heart, her feelings were well expressed in the drama.  Seo Won certainly had her charm but because it was Kang Hee noona  playing Seo Won, I reckon she was more charming than what was written in the script.   From the experience I gained this time, I learnt romance comedy was not completely based on the characters as written in the script.  I felt it was necessary to create a character which had Han Gil Ro and me.  It was like Seo Won’s charm had Kang Hee noona’s charm, so I think Gil Ro and I were charming.

~ The scenes of Gil Ro and Do Ha were also funny but how was it in film set and also your impression of Chan Sung?

Because 2PM is a very famous idol group, I knew Chan Sung.   Actually when I first met him, I was surprised to see his built body (laugh).  Because I am a man, I don’t know much details about idol group but I didn’t see him an idol at all when playing with him.  Somehow, he is a mature and grown up person, very knowledgeable, he looks more mature than his actual age.   Also he is very passionate towards acting, say even he found it hard to act out a scene requiring him to express happy feelings, I could see he gave his best shots to play well.  He is still young but there are many aspects which I think he is more mature than his actual age (laugh).   We became good friends and we still keep in touch.

~ I heard when shooting the scenes of training, all you guys were arranged to lodge together for filming.   Can you tell us any anecdotes?

Those days were like we were really in a war (laugh).  The facilities in the lodgings were good but both Kang Hee noona and I had hard time.  Both of us really had many scenes together, we didn’t need to move locations, we were filming at the same location all the time but we were filming without breaks.  I can’t recall we had taken any meals there.   Because we were so lack of sleep, when there was time for meals, we would rather go for sleep.  Therefore, we lost so much weight during filming (laugh).  Because it was the time when we first started filming and we were all lodging at the same venue, we became so closed shortly.   Also, we actually spent our Christmas there.  Although we didn’t have too much time, we still had a Christmas party, we ate chicken and pizza together.  We didn’t put up any Christmas decorations and it didn’t snow, so we didn’t feel like we already had our Christmas (laugh).   When I recall it now, that was a very special experience to me.

~ What did you gain from this drama?

It was great meeting all these wonderful actors and actresses.  We are still keeping in touch.  Yesterday, Kang Hee noona contacted me.  I think it would be great if I could meet up and travel together with all these wonderful people when having my time off.   This drama was also a new challenge to me.  I didn’t have much experience in playing romance comedy but viewers had so much fun watching it.  I believe if I work hard, I can do well.

~ Can you say a few words to readers?

This is a very light drama, I hope it makes you laugh and you have fun watching it,  please watch and laugh together with someone closed to you.  As an actor, I feel thankful that I can keep challenging myself in many good projects.   Please also look forward to seeing my next project.
